Constitution Day Micronesia

Geography

The Federated States of Micronesia is composed of the island states of Yap, Chuuk (Truk), Pohnpei (Ponape), and Kosrae, all in the Caroline Islands. The islands vary geologically from high mountainous islands to low coral atolls, with volcanic outcroppings on Pohnpei, Kosrae, and Chuuk. They are located 3,200 mi (5,150 km) west-southwest of Hawaii, in the north Pacific Ocean.

Government

History

The islands, inhabited by Micronesian and Polynesian peoples, were colonized by Spain in the 17th century. Germany purchased them from Spain in 1898. They were occupied by the Japanese in 1914, but American forces seized them from the Japanese during World War II. On April 2, 1947, the unsecured loans  United Nations Security Council created the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. The trust placed the Northern Mariana, Caroline, and Marshall Islands under the administration of the United States.
International Integration
The Micronesian Federation (FMA) became self-governing in 1979. In 1983, the FMA voted to accept a Compact of Free Association with the U.S., and in Nov. 1986, the U.S. government declared the Trust Territory agreements no longer in effect—thereby granting the Federated States of Micronesia full independence. In Nov. 2002 the compact was renewed for another 20 years. The FMA was admitted to the United Nations on Sept. 17, 1991. In July 1993, the country became a member of the International Monetary Fund.
Climactic Changes
Micronesia, as well as many other South Pacific countries, is alarmed by the effect continued global warming will have on its islands. The consequent rise in the level of the oceans threatens low-lying islands with flooding and, eventually, submergence.
In 2004, Yap was ravaged by Typhoon Sudel, and much of its infrastructure was destroyed.

Karabakh conflict.

Federation and the Republic of Armenia, columns of Russian troops
and border guards as well as of the Armenian army marched.       bad credit loans

National Heroes Day

Today is National Heroes Day in Rwanda which, as far as I can tell is a day to commemorate National Heroes. It sounds simple, but of course its not. The subtext of the day is that although heroes come from all kinds of situations the majority of today’s celebration is genocide related. In typical Rwandan fashion there also seems to be a hierarchy of heroes, and I’ve been told there are three levels. Since all of this conversation was carried out in Kinyarwanda, the only thing I am certain of is that you must be deceased to obtain the highest level of hero; presumably dying in your act of heroism but don’t quote me on it. Of the several definitions I’ve gotten about what we are supposed to be celebrating today the ones that come up most frequently are:

1.    The actions of those heroes who refused to participate or tried to stop the genocide and the soldiers of the liberation army

2.     All people who have ever done something heroic, but also 1994 you know? (this typical Rwandan “you know” always leads back to 1994).

The one story though, that also keeps being repeated, that I was initial under the impression was the whole reason for this holiday is about some school children in Nyange. Several years after the genocide ended but violence was still rampant, especially in the Lake Kivu region where this school was located, genocidaires arrived at a secondary school and asked a group of S5 and S6 students (11th and 12th grade) to separate into ethnic groups. This was not uncommon in that part of the country at the time and every one knew what would happen next if they complied. So, they didn’t. Sadly, that simply means they all died together, but it was an incredible act of solidarity that marked a turning point in the country and from what I understand led to several “copy cat” incidents around the region. This is the main sacrifice remembered today, and it’s a worthy one, but I can’t help but think of the rendition of it I read in a book on the country. In Philip Gourevitch’s book he thinks about it this way:

“ Rwandans have no need – no room in their corpse-crowded imaginations – for more martyrs. None of us does. But mightn’t we all take some courage from the example of those brave Hutu girls who could’ve chosen to live, but chose instead to call themselves Rwandans?”

Today is a day, in my mind, about Rwanda trying to cling to the notion that not everyone is guilty. And truthfully, they are not, they cannot be, but the mood is not the celebratory somber one of Veteran’s day (the American holiday they keep comparing this to) because everyone was in this war, and only some are heroes. But there are fanta and speeches and I’ve been told there would be dancing but so far have seen none of it. Maybe the holiday is different outside of a campus of pre-teens but since my life is a campus of prĂȘ-teens this is how I experience it.

As far as the celebrating goes, I had been told in advance that the holiday was marked

1. By farming
2. By dancing
3. By speeches. Since I had no idea which on it was I was unsure how to dress and decided finally on jeans and a nice top. When I went to the staff room I was told the teachers were not coming in today they had a party at the government office – which clearly I was not invited to –  unsecured loans no surprise and the only staff on campus were the disciplinarians to make sure the students went to their ceremony later. When I tried to go to the student ceremony I was told I should not because I am not Rwandan and not a student. Aka I was not invited to either. Finally, I got all “I came to this country to be included” defiant and walked over to the student ceremony anyways , naturally it was a lot boring speeches and I set the alarm on my phone so it would go off and I could pretend it was a phonecall and left. Now I’m sitting in my house writing this wondering exactly what is happening. It sounds like the students have returned from their ceremony so I might go play with them in a bit. Wouldn’t everything be so much easier if the other teachers simply told me what they expected from me?? I operate in this other realm where no one checks my lesson plans, or tells me things, and I don’t have to go to ceremonies. bad credit loans I guess its good and bad. Happy Heroes day. Whatever that means.

Liberation Day

If you are planning a trip to Albufeira in Portugal in the near future then you will discover that one of its biggest festival and events takes place on April 25th 2011 and marks the celebration of this years’ Liberation Day or “Dia da Liberdade” (or Freedom Day).

Entry is free and no tickets are required for the main events and celebrations, although there are sometimes private or ticket only events within some of the local establishments. So just check with the local tourist information office for more details and information on this event.

As this is an all day event take suitable attire for the whole day if you are planning to enjoy the party throughout the whole day. So why not join the local party atmosphere “Portuguese style” and get down to Albufeira this Easter for a festival of fun and entertainment.

Red Cross Day

THE Australian Red Cross will hold a training day in Batemans Bay early next month for local residents wanting to help in times of natural disaster or emergency.

The free one-day training course will be held at the Batemans Bay Soldiers Club on Saturday, March 3.
Those people attending will learn about the role of Red Cross in unsecured loans a disaster, gain hand-on skills and will also meet like-minded people who want to make a difference at time of need.

Volunteers may then be called on times of disaster such as bushfires, floods, earthquakes ir storms when their roles might include meeting people as they arrive at an evacuation centre, providing emotional support and a listening ear or helping with practical tasks.

Red Cross Emergency Services State Manager Diana Bernardi said Red Cross has a long history of helping communities but could only do so with a strong volunteer bases. bad credit loans

Disasters, she said, could strike at any time and it was important to have pool of volunteers read to help locals in their own communities.

“During a crisis, volunteers play a vital role in providing information, care, comfort and a helping hand to people at evacuation and recovery centres,” she said.

“ It can be a very rewarding to be a Red Cross volunteer and to give something back to the community.”

manchester marathon

The Manchester Marathon was won today by a forty-two year old woman from Salford called Annette Fisher.

"I hadn't even realised I'd entered the marathon," said Ms Fisher. "I'd hung my bed sheets out on the line because it was quite windy and I thought that they would dry quickly."

According to Ms Fisher, the sheets did indeed dry quickly, unfortunately, they also were ripped from the washing line by a sudden gust of wind.

"I looked out of the window as the last of the pegs came off," she recalled. "I was in my training shoes and out of the back door before you could say 'advanced cleaning even at thirty degrees'."

However, she wasn't quick enough and her best fitted sheet billowed like a balloon cleared the leylandii hedge and was off over the Manchester ship canal.

"I couldn't afford another fitted sheet," Ms Fisher said. "They're nearly ten pounds at Wilkos. I knew I had to catch it."

She ran off after the sheet, accidentally joining in the Manchester Marathon that was coincidentally taking place the same day, not quarter of a mile from her door.

"I'd forgotten it was on," she admitted. "I ran past all these people in ridiculous outfits. I mean, it was only seven degrees, and they were in shorts."

Just over two hours later, Ms Fisher caught up with her sheet, wrapped around the finish line.

"I thought this black bloke in a green vest was after my sheet," Ms Fisher said. "I thought 'I'm buggered if I'm running all this way only to have some scrote from the estate nicking it'." unsecured loans

An extra burst of speed and Ms Fisher overtook Brian Olanga from Kenya and snatched the sheet off the line.

"I was very surprised to be given a nice shiny silver bed sheet as well," she said. "It'll come in handy for Halloween. They also gave me a medal and a thousand pound prize money. That's going to come in very handy, because the bed sheet was ruined."                  bad credit loans

World Press Freedom Day

On May 3, the eyes of the world will focus on Washington, D.C., for World Press Freedom Day -- a celebration designated by UNESCO in 1993 to draw public attention to the obstacles faced by journalists in gathering and distributing the vital information necessary for an informed public.

This is the first time World Press Freedom Day will have been commemorated on U.S. soil. Because it is America's first-ever World Press Freedom Day, it's the right time to take stock of the state of America's own press freedoms -- and where those freedoms fall short and are in need of improvement to realize the full promise of the First Amendment.

While U.S. law affords professional journalists some of the strongest protections against government interference anywhere in the world, the job of freeing America's presses will remain half-done so long as those freedoms fail to effectively protect journalists working on the campuses of schools and colleges.

As a result of the U.S. Supreme Court's 1988 ruling in Hazelwood School District v. Kuhlmeier, many schools and colleges believe that they can completely dictate the content of campus publications and punish any deviation from their orders. Since Hazelwood, America's students have been victimized by what one legal scholar called a "censorship tsunami," with the brunt often falling on the country's most respected and effective journalism teachers: unsecured loans
  • In Colorado, where -- until an outpouring of publicity and threats of legal action reversed the school's decision -- a 14-year veteran adviser was removed and a student newspaper discontinued because its staff truthfully reported the story of a student athlete who died after a wrestling meet.
  • In North Dakota, where the adviser of an award-winning newspaper that had just produced the state's "Student Journalist of the Year" winner was stripped of his duties because of complaints from the school district that the students' news coverage was overly aggressive. bad credit loans
  • In Illinois, where students were forced against their will to sign their names to, and hand-distribute, an administration-sanitized newspaper that school officials repeatedly denied having censored.
Such abuses of power by government officials have no place in a free society that values open dialogue about matters of public concern. Censorship undermines the valuable civic engagement benefits of working on a journalistic publication. It teaches young people the destructive lesson that government officials get to decide how and when they may be criticized.

Each World Press Freedom Day ends with a declaration of shared values and principles adopted by the participating delegates. It would be fitting for America to confront the shortcomings in the protection of the nation's most vulnerable journalists by supporting a firm statement of student rights as part of the Washington Declaration that will conclude World Press Freedom Day 2011.

haitian agriculture and labor day

The U.S. government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), kicked-off Haiti's National Agriculture and Labor Day on May 1 by inaugurating a cutting-edge agricultural training center.

The Sustainable Rural Development Center will help modernize Haiti's agricultural sector by training farmers to use innovative agriculture techniques that will increase unsecured loans crop yields and boost incomes. The five-hectare campus features a training center, warehouse, dormitory, three laboratories and a distance-learning facility.

The dormitory will allow farmers from across the country, including the northern region, to benefit from the resources physically located at the Center, and an online video link with the University of Florida will connect them to the expertise of U.S. agronomists.

Haitian farmers will learn how to analyze soil, identify pests and diagnose diseases that hamper crop production. They will also learn to use tools and techniques like drip irrigation and fertilizer briquettes that reduce costs and boost yields.

Agriculture is central to the Haitian economy, generating nearly 25 percent of gross domestic product and employing more than 60 percent of the population, but declining crop production has plagued Haiti for the past 50 years. The Government of Haiti identified agriculture as a key sector to create jobs and boost the economy. The U.S. government responded by designating agriculture as one of the four areas targeted for earthquake reconstruction along with health, governance and infrastructure.

Initially, public and private sector partners will manage the new center, including: USAID, the Haitian Ministry of Agriculture, the National School of Agronomy, local farmer associations, and representatives from Haitian agribusinesses. In the next few years, the U.S. government will transfer full management responsibilities to Haitian institutions.

"Our support will help train thousands of farmers over the next few years," said USAID/Haiti Mission Director Carleene Dei. "Once the center is running smoothly, Haitian institutions will possess the knowledge and experience to manage the center without our assistance."

The Sustainable Rural Development Center is one of eight agricultural training centers built with U.S. government funding in Haiti. The facilities are part of President Obama's global hunger and food security initiative, Feed the Future, which is working to reduce global hunger bad credit loans and poverty by supporting country-led plans for agricultural development.

Day of Resistance Slovenia

Over 100 national experts attended a symposium marking World Health Day 2011 at Ljubljana University Clinical Centre, Slovenia on 1 April 2011. This year the national annual symposium on communicable diseases focused on antimicrobial resistance. The symposium was unsecured loans opened by Minister of Health Dr Dorijan Maruơič and Dr Marijan Ivanuơa, Head of the WHO Country Office in Slovenia and was the core national event marking World Health Day 2011.

Speakers included experts on communicable diseases, hospital infections and antimicrobial resistance, including members of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

The speakers pointed out that even though Slovenia belongs to those countries that prescribe antimicrobial drugs more rationally, there is substantial room for improvement. The use of antibiotics is still too high (twice as high as in Scandinavian countries), although the bad credit loans number of prescriptions for antibiotics decreased in primary health care by approximately 25% in the last decade.

The co-organizers of the symposium, the Section for antimicrobial therapy at the Slovene Medical Association, the Cathedra for Infectious Diseases and Epidemiology, and the Clinic for Infectious Diseases and Febrile Illnesses published a report, "Challenges of the antimicrobial resistance in Slovenia: do we know how to respond?"

Union Day in Tanzania

Tanzanians celebrate Union Day every April 26. Union Day is a commemoration of the day when Tanganyika and Zanzibar united to become the United Republic of Tanzania in 1964.

On this day, the bigger parades with contingents coloured by pupils and government and non-government institutions swarm the major grounds and streets. The government holds ceremonial speeches to commemorate the merging of the two states to form a new republic with a shared goal and vision

This year’s official ceremony was held at Amani Stadium unsecured loans Zanzibar. More than 700 pupils participated in the celebrations with 200 coming from Tanzania Mainland and 500 from Zanzibar. The Young Citizen spoke to some of the pupils who participated in the celebrations and here is what they had to say.

Natasha Abdul from Hazina Primary School: The Union celebrations were colourful and we really enjoyed because it was first the first time for us  to participate and we learnt lots of things about the union, which was founded by Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere and then Zanzibar’s President, Abeid Amani Karume.

The decision made by the founder fathers of our nation has resulted in the lasting peace, political stability, economic and cultural growth which our generation is enjoying now.

Michael Mathayo from Micheweni Primary School: it was an interesting day because as pupils we managed to participate fully in the celebrations. In our group we performed an acrobatic show by mixing sand both from Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar. This was the same symbolic act  which was done by founder fathers on the birth day of the union.

What was even more interesting was the fact that we did all this in the presence of our current presidents Jakaya Kikwete and Dr Mohammed Shein.Noela Shayo from Bunge Primary School: Although it rained much of the day,  we still braved the downpour to show the love for our country. The most entertaining moment was when we sang our national anthem.

Salma Rashid : it was fun for me because our group bad credit loans managed to shape 47 years of union and other structures while dancing to a song played by special band. The rehearsal we used to hold after class hours took us almost one month to perfect.

I advise other pupils and children to make sure we respect and strengthen our union no matter what since it is the only a true sign of our identity wherever we go.

Aragon Day

Yesterday was given over completely to Catherine of Aragon. We went to three places all very important in the last two years of her life.

Kimbolton Castle, was first up geographically. It's where she died and is said to haunt. The place is now a school with about 650 students and not generally open to the public, only special tours allowed. The place is very diferent from when Catherine knew it, it had a huge amount of works done in the 1700's but the chapel she was laid in and the rooms she lived and died in are there still. Our tour guide read out Catherine's last letter in the room it was written, that gave you a funny feeling to say the least.

The second place was Buckden Towers, a Bishops Palace and where Catherine was held for a time before being moved to Kimbolton and where the Duke of Suffolk tried with a few armed men to take her away but the local men stood in his way and would not let her be taken. This stand off lasted for 5 days before the Duke went off to get some more men. Our special guide was so enthusiastic about the place from the gardens to the tower that it was hard to tear ourselves away and on to the next place.

Lastly was Peterborough Cathedral where she is buried. A simple black marble slab markes the grave paid for in the 1800's when all women called Catherine unsecured loans was asked to make a small donation. The people of England loved her when she was alive and they love her still, rarely a day goes by without fresh flowers on her grave. As it was Mothering Sunday we stayed for evensong and the power of the sound when the organ was playing was incredible, The type of power that you get when you turn up the volume on the stereo up to 11 on the dial, I was away and soaring. We had a bit more time after with our special guide to see some of the secrets of this magnificent Cathedral. We timed our exit from the Cathedral just has the heavens opened nad rained heavily for the first time this week.

Along the way we also saw a pair of red kites, a very rare bad credit loans bird in England only 600pairs in the whole country

Carfest

No stranger to the world of petrol, chrome and classic cars, Evans has twisted the arm of friend and former F1 World Champion, Jody Scheckter for help with his fund-raising summer extravaganza. Scheckter is now a renowned organic farmer, and his Hampshire estate, Laverstoke Park, will host CarFest and its expected 15,000 crowd.

Understandably, with the event still in its infancy, many details are unconfirmed, although the event is being billed as a decidedly family-friendly show for car-lovers. To keep us car lovers entertained, a feature Evans dubbed the ‘Magnificent Sevens’ promises cars in groups of sevens in hill climbing runs. Evans has also expressed a desire for a practical and affordable classic car element to be included, giving the event an ‘every enthusiast’ appeal. He also hopes there will be people selling classic cars there.

Other essential ingredients being added to the event include cooking displays by celebrity chefs such as James Martin, and a Saturday night concert featuring well-known Scots soft-rockers, Texas and Ocean Colour Scene. Live on air from his morning show, Evans has also name-checked The Feeling, Magic Numbers and spoken with Band Aid co-organiser Midge Ure, and they have just confirmed Razorlight – so expect the unexpected.

Evans’ love of exotic Italian supercars, unsecured loans classic and modern is no secret, and it’s likely they’ll feature in the proceedings. How about a Ferrari 25O GTO driven by a mysterious Stig-like Pudsey Bear costume-wearing special guest?

Oh, and look out for the Bloody bad credit loans Mary and Bacon Buttie tent!

Grand National

Whilst Liverpool and Everton fans head down the Liverpool Lime Street-Euston line for Saturday’s FA Cup Semi-Final at Wembley, back home one of this biggest sporting events is taking place at Aintree in North Liverpool.

The Grand National is certainly the most popular horse race in Britain and a race in which everyone wants to have a bet, whatever the size. Unfortunately, many punters are backing horses that historically have no chance of actually winning the race. It takes a certain type of horse to win the Grand National and when you can find reasons to back up the stats that help find the winner, it makes sense to use those stats to find the most likely winners from the Grand National runners.

Backing favourites in horse racing can be frowned upon in some circles but backing the favourites, or other well fancied horses, in the Grand National has been a great tactic in recent years. There have been 21 Grand National races run since 1990 and 17 of those have gone to horses who have started the race with odds of 20/1 or less and 12 have been won by horses carrying odds of 14/1 or less. This shows that Grand National winners are not only fairly well fancied but very well fancied in most years. There is always the rare upset, Mon Mome won at 100/1 in 2009, but with only 4 winners from the last 21 starting at more than 20/1 it makes sense to look at the best fancied horses if looking for the most likely Grand National runners to win the Grand National.

Coral Scottish Grand National
Antepost Win And Each Way
Odds Bookie
Harry The Viking 6/1
Ikorodu Road 10/1
Merigo 10/1
Portrait King 10/1

There is one ‘favourite’ to take on though each year and that is the previous year’s Grand National winner. The previous year’s winner has a decent record of running well the next year if they run at all but no horse has managed to put successive victories together in the race since the great Red Rum in 1974 and Red Rum is the only horse to manage this in the last 76 years. This is bad news for Ballabriggs then but whilst you should be put off backing him to win, don’t be afraid to back him to place. Last year the reigning champ Don’t Push It ran into third, 2008 winner Comply Or Die was a runner up in 2009 whilst Hedgehunter followed up his 2005 win with a great effort to finish second in 2006. They were all near favouritism on the day and all failed to win but they are proof that Ballabriggs will probably finish second or third, good news for punters brave enough to have a forecast or tricast bet on the race.

The main reason why horses can’t put back to back wins together in this race is weight. The Grand National is a handicap and the previous year’s winner will always unsecured loans end up carrying more weight than they did the year before. It seems the cut off for a potential winner weight-wise is 11-5. Red Rum was the last winner to carry more than 11-5 to victory and he is a bit of a Grand National freak, the likes of which we will never see again. The only horses to even place in the Grand National in the last seven years carrying more than 11-5 had either won or bad credit loans placed in the Grand National previously and if horses carrying more than 11-5 can’t win this year, including the fancied horses, that would rule out at least Synchronised, Ballabriggs and Calgary Bay who, as things stand, will be running in this year’s race.

These aren’t the only stats that a potential Grand National winner will need to pass, the last ten winners of the Grand National had met other key statistics such as winning over 3 miles or more, winning a chase worth at least £17,000 and also running in ten or more races over fences before taking in the Grand National.

Youth Day

AS World Youth Day (WYD) celebrations get under way in Spain, thousands of young Catholics from central Vietnam have showed their solidarity with world delegates at a special gathering.

Some two thousand youths in uniform from Hue Archdiocese attended a rally at the National Shrine of Our Lady of La Vang in Quang Tri province on August 14-15. bad credit loans The gathering, with the theme Planted and built up in Jesus Christ, firm in the faith, was organized by the archdiocesan committee for youth ministry.

“The gathering aims to create an opportunity for local youths to express family solidarity with youth representatives throughout the world in Spain from their home,” said Father Benedict Ngo Van Hai, an organizer.

Father Hai said local people did not have enough money to cover the expense of the pilgrimage to Spain for WYD.

olympic torch route

A street-by-street map of the Olympic torch relay has been published.
Proposed start times of when and where the Olympic Flame will travel across Britain are also included -

London 2012 chairman Lord Coe declared "today we bring the Olympic Torch Relay to life" as organisers hope the 8,000-mile relay involving 8,000 torchbearers will be the point when enthusiasm for the Games ignites across the country.
Details on the two-day finale to the 70-day relay, which brings the Olympic Flame to the lighting of the cauldron to start the Games are being kept under wraps until closer to the start of the relay at Land's End on May 19.
Around 7,000 people, many of whom are members of the public who have shown community spirit, courage and sporting determination, have been named as torchbearers.
The youngest unsung hero is 12 and each unsecured loan torchbearer will wear a white-and-gold uniform which been designed by adidas.
An average of 115 torchbearers a day will carry the flame during the nationwide relay, from May 19 to July 27, to the opening ceremony in Stratford, east London.
Unusual ways have been found for some of them to complete their relay leg.
A torchbearer will carry the flame on a chair lift at the Needles on the Isle of Wight, another will skate with it at the Nottingham Ice Centre and it will be rowed at bad credit loans Henley-on-Thames and on the River Bann in Coleraine, Northern Ireland.
High-flying activities await some torchbearers as the flame will abseil down the Dock Tower at Grimsby and swoop off the Tyne Bridge in Newcastle Gateshead on a zip wire.
Restoration work to the Flying Scotsman means that the Scots Guardsman train will now take the flame on its journey between York and Thirsk.
It will also be taken on a skywalk at Croke Park as it visits Dublin on June 6 in its only stop outside of the UK.
After protests that marred the international leg of the torch relay before the Beijing Games, the International Olympic Committee ruled that future relays would be restricted to the host country.
The overall route has been designed to also take in cultural institutions such as the Turner Gallery in Margate and Cass Sculpture Park at Goodwood as well as many of sporting stadia and racecourses.
Lord Coe said: "The flame symbolises the Olympic spirit and its journey around the UK will bring the excitement of the Games to our streets.
"Now the people know the route the Olympic Flame will be carried along and the torchbearers for their community, they can start planning how they might celebrate."
The detailed information means that crowds of cheering supporters and onlookers will be able to plan where to be when the flame and its' torchbearer pass along their nearest high street, through their town square or past their local village shop.
Lord Coe hopes the different regions will take the chance to make it "a moment to shine".
The aim is the flame is brought to within 10 miles of 95% of the population.
The torchbearers were chosen through the nomination schemes run by London 2012 and sponsors Samsung, Lloyds TSB and Coca-Cola.
Background checks are being run on all the nominees before the final line-up is confirmed.

Cuba Suppresses Youths’ Uprising

HAVANA, March 13—Forty youths were reported killed this afternoon in an apparently unsuccessful surprise attempt to overthrow the Batista regime. A number of soldiers and police men also were reported killed.
The youths attacked the Presidential Palace with rifles, machine guns and hand grenades.
They rushed the Colon Street entrance, killed the sergeant on guard, and got inside the palace.
In all, five Government troops were killed in the Palace, according to an official estimate.
The palace guard mowed down some rebels in the patio and on the stairway as they tried to reach the upper floors. Others were killed outside the palace.

Ten Tanks Rushed to City

The army rushed ten tanks, numerous anti-aircraft guns and several thousand troops into the city from near-by Camp Columbia. The reserves were able to lift the siege of the beleaguered Palace garrison before the rebels could succeed in their apparent attempt to kill President Fulgencio Batista.
The attack continued for about two hours, during which firing was heard in many parts of the city. Then the Government announced that order had been restored and that the President and his family were safe.
Tonight the uprising appeared to be over, at least for the time being. However, firing was still reported in the outskirts of the city.
The attack appeared to have been made by student revolutionaries and adherents of former President Carlos Prio Socarros.

Batista Accuses Pro-Reds

Dr. Prio had been ousted in 1952 by the military coup that brought President Batista to power after an absence of several years. The ousted President now lives in Florida.
General Batista attributed today’s attack to a pro-Communist group.
“The people have responded as always in support of the Government to maintain order and peace,” he added.
He said the Cuban public had never supported and would not support pro-Communists.
During the fighting, a United States tourist, Peter Korinda of Clifton, N.J., was killed as he stepped out on the balcony of the Regis Hotel on Colon Street, about two blocks from the palace. He was struck in the neck by a bullet, and he died before he could be taken to a hospital.
Because of the uprising, all airline flights into and out of Cuba were canceled this afternoon. National flights in Cuba also were canceled.
Downtown Havana tonight looked like an armed camp. The streets were barred to civilians. All motion picture theatres and night clubs were closed.
Censorship was established by the Ministry of Communications on radio and television. The order barred the showing of any of the fighting. Only official announcements may be broadcast by radio and television.
It was not immediately clear whether the insurgents had any connection with Fidel Castro, the rebel leader who has been holding forth since December in the mountains of Oriente Province at the eastern end of Cuba.
Señor Castro is supported by some students but is said to have operated independently of the revolutionary students in Havana, although on a parallel course.
However, Cuban Army headquarters charged tonight that those who attacked the palace were Communist followers of Señor Castro and former President Prio.
The known dead included Menelao Mora, who was a member of Congress in the Prio Administration; José Antonio Echevarria, president of the student federation at the University of Havana, and a policeman.
Today’s uprising began at 3:20 P.M. About that time the insurgents simultaneously attacked the Presidential Palace in downtown Havana and Radio Station Reloj (Clock) in suburban Vedado, several miles away. Radio Reloj broadcasts news and the time of day.
The rebels captured the radio station quickly and broadcast stories indicating that the revolt was a success. Included was a report that the Army had dismissed its Chief of Staff, Gen. Francisco Tabernilla.
Two hours later, however, General Tabernilla issued a statement from Camp Columbia, which is Army headquarters, that the uprising was over. Firing continued around the Presidential Palace for forty minutes more until about 6 P.M.
At that time the palace was surrounded by soldiers, tanks and anti-aircraft guns. President Batista sent word from the palace that he and his family were safe.
In the attack on the palace, a group fired from the roof of an adjacent building. Witnesses said the palace steps and patio ran with blood. The walls of the patio were badly damaged by machine gun fire.
For nearly three hours, tanks, machine guns and rifles fired from the palace grounds to dislodge the snipers on the roof.
Near-by business houses closed, and residents of the palace area bad credit loans remained in their homes behind shuttered doors and windows. Soldiers and policemen refused to let anyone leave the vicinity.
The New York Times office, which is on the same street as the palace, a block away, shook with the firing. Bullets struck the rear wall.
The National Capitol and the Ministry of Health were also attacked by groups of youths. Gun battles in various parts of the city disrupted traffic and paralyzed ordinary activities.
Gen. Hernando Hernandez, chief of the national police, said tonight that the attack on the palace had been completely defeated. He directed the public to remain at home after 6 P.M. as sporadic shooting might occur.
Early reports were that thirty or forty men had taken part in the initial unsecured loans  phase of each of the two main attacks, but had been joined later by others. Still others were said to have taken part in the firing in other parts of the city.

Slain American Was 38

Mr. Korinda was 38 years old and worked as a shipping clerk for a chemical company in Garfield, N.J. He served in the Army for three years during World War II.
Relatives said he had left for Florida March 4 for a two-week vacation, with plans for a brief side trip to Cuba.
He was survived by his mother, Mrs. Anna Korinda; four brothers and a sister.

Mothers Day, Origins

All the celebrations and festivals have some or the other reason in their roots as their origin. And they are all supported by several traditions. These traditions may vary region to region but their unsecured loans ultimate objective is quite similar. Same is the case with the Mother's Day celebrations…

Mothers Day Origin In The United Kingdom (England)

The modern way of celebrating the holy Mother's Day has its roots back into the seventeenth century England culture.
Today the mother's day is celebrated with families. This is the day when people bring flowers and gifts to their moms. But originally all this begins with the "Mothering Sunday", which was the fourth Sunday in Lent.
The Mothering Sunday was the day in earlier times when all the children who were away from their homes were allowed to return their homes. However they were away from their homes either for learning a trade or to work as servants to earn livelihood.
Gradually it became a tradition that on this day the family used to gather for a mid-Lenten feast in which the Mother was treated as the 'Special Guest'. As the children visited their moms on this day in order to spend entire day with their mothers they used to give treats of cakes to their mothers. They also used to get wildflower bouquets and other such things for their mothers.
The same 'Mothering Sunday' is today celebrated as and popularly known as the Mother's Day

Mother's Day Origin In the United States Of America

In the United States Of America (USA) the situation was quite different. There the early English settlers often disapproved of more secular holidays and this is why the Mothering Sunday tradition never really took hold in the USA. Even some early attempts made there in this regard were mixed with women's suffrage and other peace movements.
In the USA it was Julia Ward Howe, the author of the words to the Battle Hymn of the Republic, who came with the idea of an International Mother's day in 1872. It is noticeable here that her objective behind this was not exactly to honor mothers but to celebrate the peace.
Another important name associated with present form of Mother's Day celebrations is of Anna Jarvis. Anna Jarvis was the person who made lots of efforts for establishing Mother's Day, as a national celebration. Jarvis held an annual gathering "Mother's Friendship Day", with an objective to heal the pain of the victims and those affected of the Civil War. After the death of her mother in 1905, Anna began a campaign for the establishment of an official Mother's Day bad credit loans in order to commemorate and pay tribute to her mother.
It could be said that Anna Jarvis devoted her entire life making efforts to have Mother's Day declared as a national holiday. She began her struggle in the spring of 1908. As her first step made in this direction she wrote to the Superintendent of Andrew's Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia. This was the place where her mother had taught Sunday School classes for over 20 years. In her letter to the Superintendent she urged that a Mother's Day service should be held in honor of her mother.

First Mother's Day Celebration Service

As a result of her efforts the first official Mother's Day was celebrated on May 10, 1908 at Andrew's Methodist Church, where her mother had taught. 407 persons attended this celebration. For this function held at the church in Grafton Anna Jarvis sent 500 white carnations. One carnation was to be worn by each son and daughter and two by each mother in attendance.

Another Mother's Day Celebration Service

Another Mother's Day celebration service was held in Philadelphia. Philadelphia was the place where Anna resided with her brother. She celebrated Mother's Day there later that afternoon.

Official Mother's Day

Finally in 1914 President Woodrow Wilson declared that Mother's Day should be celebrated as a national holiday on the second Sunday in May.

Happy Birthday Oreo!!!

Kidding. It’s not my birthday.
It’s the 100th birthday of Oreo Cookies.
I had to jump on the Birthday Cake Oreo Cookie bandwagon, and what better way to eat chocolate-and-frosting sandwich cookies than to stuff them inside chocolate brownies and top the entire chocolatey mess with frosting.
Cookies on their own are good, but stuffed inside brownies, they’re even better.
I’m not alone in the Birthday Oreo baking bonanza because recently, I’ve seen:
The major difference I notice with the Birthday Cake Oreos compared to regular Oreos is that they smell like birthday cake. Yum.
But they don’t really taste like cake. I wish they tasted how they smelled, which is positively divine.
That’s okay because brownies make up for the unsecured loans  lack of a strong cake flavor.
Chocolate remedies everything.
I also noticed that the Birthday Cake Oreos are slightly sweeter than regular Oreos, but not by much.
If you can’t find Birthday Oreos, or in the future bad credit loans when these special limited edition Oreos won’t be around, no worries. Just use the old standby original Oreo.
Whatever you use, when you’re stuffing cookies inside brownies, you’re going to be happy.
And topped with a thick layer of vanilla buttercream frosting, you’re going to be even happier.

Birthday Cake Oreo Cookie-Stuffed Brownies with Vanilla Buttercream Frosting and Sprinkles
Makes 24 brownies
Notes: If desired, use a boxed brownie mix, and prepare as indicated; pouring half the batter into the pan, topping with Oreos, and pouring remaining batter over the top of them. Bake as directed, but I would suggest a 25-30 minute guideline. Use storebought frosting if desired. If you cannot find Birthday Oreos, use any desired Oreo variety.
4 ounces baking chocolate (I used 10 squares of TJ’s 72% chocolate bar or use 4 squares Baker’s Chocolate, semi-sweet)
3/4 cup butter or margarine, melted (1 1/2 sticks)
2 cups sugar
3 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons espresso or brewed coffee, optional
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup sprinkles, optional
15 Birthday Oreo Cookies (or Original Oreos)
Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a 9×13-inch pan with foil and spray it with cooking spray. Microwave chocolate and butter in large microwave-safe bowl for 90 seconds or until butter is melted. Stir until chocolate is completely melted. Stir in sugar (it will seem very granular, this is okay). Stir in eggs and vanilla. If adding espresso or coffee, add it now. Stir in flour until just combined, do not overmix. Stir in sprinkles if using. Spread half the brownie batter in prepared pan. Place Oreos on top of brownie batter (I did 3 across by 5 rows = 15 Oreos). Top with the remaining brownie batter and smooth it over the top, very slightly pushing the Oreos down with your spatula, very lightly. Bake 26 to 30 minutes or until brownies are set, taking care not to overbake. (Insert a toothpick into the center of the pan, and avoid inserting it into an Oreo, to check for doneness. Toothpick may not come out entirely clean even when done because these are very fudgy brownies). Note the brownies may “puff up” quite dramatically in their final minutes of cooking and this is okay. Let them cool completely, about 1 hour, or put the pan into the freezer for 10 minutes if you’re rushed before frosting, slicing, and serving. While brownies are cooling, make frosting (or use storebought)
Vanilla Buttercream Frosting (adapted from the C&H Cane Sugar box)
1 pound (1 box) powdered sugar (about 4 cups)
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/4 cup cream (or half-and-half, or milk)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (use clear vanilla to keep your frosting extra white if this matters to you)
1/4 teaspoon Bright White Soft Gel Paste, optional (discussed here)
Mix until very smooth. (You may need to play with the cream and/or powdered sugar ratio very slightly while mixing the frosting until your preferred frosting consistency is reached). Frost the brownies and garnish with more sprinkles, as desired.

Getting to the point where you can chomp into one of these is easy.
Just make the brownie batter from scratch because it only takes 5 minutes, but if you really want to use a boxed mix, use that and mix it according to the directions (plus I’d add 2 tablespoons of coffee and a dash of vanilla extract).
Pour half the batter into the pan. Use foil so you can just lift this whole 6.743 pounds of brownie-cookie-frosting mixture out with ease. It’s so much easier that way and less messy and less chance of wasting chocolate at the bottom of a pan.
Crack open a package of Oreos. Birthday Oreos are fun, but any Oreo will do and top the brownies with Oreos. I used 15 but you could have used less, or more, depending on how ridiculous delicious you want these brownies to be.
Pour the rest of the brownie batter over the top and use a spatula to smooth the top. I suggest lighting smooshing the Oreos down some with your spatula so they “embed” into the bottom layer but don’t smoosh too much that they “bottom out”.
Bake for at least 26 minutes and start checking them at that point. Baking times could vary based on how many Oreos uses, oven temperature variances, if you made brownies from scratch or not, how halfway raw very gooey you like your brownies, and so forth. Use the toothpick test and common sense but know that a toothpick may not come out perfectly clean because these are very fudgy brownies. Also watch the edges and if they’re pulling away from the sides of the pan and foil, that’s a very good sign these babies are ready.
If you’re a brownie fan:
Peanut Butter Cup Brownie Cupcakes with White Chocolate Icing
Fudgy Nutella Brownies with Cream Cheese Frosting
Triple Layer Fudgy Mint Oreo Brownies
Happy Birthday, Oreo!
